Link to Bike Article

OK - I figured out how to create a link to the story that was on the front page of the Life section on Sunday. A pretty low resolution version of the picture is included.

As alluded to last week, on Sunday the paper ran a story about what folks are doing to save gas money. It was on the front page of the lifestyle page, and covering the article was a 5x7 full color photo of me! Naturally I have gotten plenty of razzing over the last two days. Its been fun to be in the spotlight a little. Plenty of folks asking for my autograph and strangers at work saying "saw you in the paper..."

I really wish that the local paper had a more accessible online edition. The premium version is for paper subscribers only, and when I tried to set up an account they said I allready had one - but wouldn't let me use the password reset function. (These darn extranet sites - you'd think someone would figure them out.... uuh ... don't we do that too.... well, er)

So when I get the linkage figured out I'll post some sort of link to the article. But in the mean time, I'm just enjoying the glow.

Saturday Morning

A typical Saturday morning. I bring my laptop downstairs while the coffee is brewing and start reading the lectionary and my favorite blogs . Soon I start hearing a thump thump thump. It's Liliana slowly making her way down the stairs. She comes down and climbs up in my lap. We both have our comforts - she has her blanket, I have my coffee and we sit and snuggle in the morning silence.

The usual joke is that I'm jealous because in addition to her blanket, she also has such a tasty thumb to suck. She willingly lets me borrow one of her thumbs for a minute and are both happy and quiet.

But now she climbs back down and goes back up the stairs to get in her bed... What a great start to my Saturday.

The REAL Katrina Before and After

Over the past two weeks every time there has been before and after pictures of NewOrleans - I've said, "I wish Google had this." So today - here we are.

Before
And After Katrina.

Boy will this waste lots of my time. Looks like Rob Cockerham already wisely used some of his time....

On Friday my friend from media relations called about a story the paper is doing on how folks are handling the rising gas prices. She remembered that i was riding my bike to work and asked if I was doing more riding because of the gas. Oo-so-right-oo. So the paper called and we interviewed, and apparently a story is emerging. In itself that is so funny because I'm not at all the diehard bike commuter or gear-head or bike advocacy guru. I'm just a bum with a cheap mountain bike that doesn't mind huffing over Missionary Ridge or riding with traffic on McCallie at 6:45 am.

So they called again today and wanted to shoot the picture. Now were talking. I met the photog at the start of my ride and he said he'd just hop ahead and shoot me further down McCallie. I saw his car and started to look out for it. I never saw it again. But maybe because I was looking for his car, trying to think about where he'd be so I could mug appropriately - I didn't see the lurking white Buick laying in wait on the side street. I usually make it a point to look for side streets and either point or make harsh eye contact to ensure they have seen me - but NO! By the time I saw the car - it was right in my path. Hard Brake, Endo, Road Rash and the car turned and drove right away! I was basically all right. In fact right behind the lurking Buick was an ambulance. they asked if I needed help and I looked at the leg and the elbow, washed them out and continued on my way. Intentionally ignoring the thought of the photographer.

Turned out he didn't think I was as fast as I am (I don't think I'm very fast) and so he missed me at the shot spot. We connected at my house and he took more formal biker portrait shots. I did ask him to avoid shooting the road rash, it just wouldn't encourage anyone else to ride.

We'll see if the story makes waves this weekend. Maybe just a link with the commute by bike guys.
